Topping up your PayPal balance.

Besides using credit card as a payment method for your PayPal account, you can also top up your PayPal balance by making a local interbank transfer. You can then pay for your online purchases, or send personal payments in Hong Kong dollars to friends and family within Hong Kong for free.

You must link your local bank account to your PayPal account in order to top up. The name on both your PayPal and bank accounts must match for the funds to go through, otherwise the top-up transaction will fail and your bank may impose a penalty charge on you.

You may be asked to confirm your bank account after you’ve linked it. Although you don’t need to complete this in order to top up, we encourage you to do so to ensure your bank account is properly linked to your PayPal account.

After you’ve registered the beneficiary (it may take a few days to process), log in to your online banking system and select local interbank transfer.
Select the above beneficiary bank account and select a transfer option (if available).
Follow your bank’s instruction carefully as processing time and fee may vary. Your bank may charge you a local interbank transfer fee, but there is no charge from PayPal.

Request a local interbank transfer in Hong Kong dollars.
You may need to select a transfer option (if available).
Use the local bank account you linked to your PayPal account as the funding account.

Your bank may charge you a local interbank transfer fee, but there is no charge from PayPal.

It usually takes 3-6 business days for the funds to appear in your PayPal balance, depending on your bank and the transfer option.

If you don’t see it in your PayPal balance after 6 business days, please have your own bank account information ready (including bank name, bank code, account number, date of transaction, transfer amount) and Contact us.

What is PayPal Top-up?

In addition to linking a credit card to your PayPal Account to fund your purchase, PayPal Top-up is a feature that allows you to transfer funds from your local bank account to your PayPal account by making a local interbank transfer. You can then use the balance in your PayPal account to pay for online purchases. It’s an additional way for you to pay more securely, or send money in HKD to your friends and family within Hong Kong using PayPal.

How does it work?

It’s just like a local interbank transfer. You transfer funds from your bank account to PayPal’s bank account, PayPal will then release the fund to your PayPal account and add it to your balance. However, for PayPal to know the money is coming from your own bank account, it’s important that you to link your bank account to your PayPal account first.

Is there anything I need to do before topping up my PayPal account?

Yes, in order to allow PayPal to reconcile your PayPal account with your bank account, you must first link a bank account to your PayPal account and the name on both accounts must match. Otherwise the top-up transaction will fail and your bank may impose a penalty charge on you. Refer to Step 1 under “How to top up” for details.

Why must my PayPal account name match the name on my bank account?

For regulatory and security reason, the name on your bank account must match the name on your PayPal account so that PayPal can identify you. Also, if the name doesn’t match, the transaction will fail and your bank may impose a penalty charge on you.

How long does it take for the funds to arrive in my PayPal account?

If you’ve linked a bank account to your PayPal account and followed the instruction correctly, it normally takes 3 - 6 business days for funds to appear in your PayPal balance, depending on your bank and the transfer option. If you don’t see it in your PayPal account after 6 business days, please have the information of your own bank account ready (including bank name, bank code, account number, date of transaction, transfer amount) and contact us.

Does it cost anything to top up my PayPal account?

PayPal does not charge any fee for Top-up. However, your bank may charge you a local interbank transfer fee. Please refer to your bank’s fee schedule for details.

Is there a maximum Top-up amount?

Yes, the maximum Top-up amount is $80,000 HKD each time.

Can I top up my PayPal account with foreign currency (non-HKD) from a local bank in Hong Kong?

No, PayPal Top-up only supports funds in Hong Kong dollar.

Can I top up my PayPal account with Hong Kong dollar funds from a bank outside of Hong Kong?

No, PayPal Top-up only supports Hong Kong dollar funds from a local bank in Hong Kong.

Can I top up my PayPal account from an ATM machine?

Top-up from an ATM machine is currently not supported by PayPal. You need to use your bank’s online system or go to a bank branch to make a local interbank transfer to top up.

Why was my Top-up rejected?

Possible reasons include:

The names on your PayPal account and bank account don’t match.
You transfer funds from a financial institution not supported by PayPal Top-up, or your funds are not in Hong Kong dollars.
You haven’t linked a bank account to your PayPal account before topping up.
